General Information:
Small-series Leismüller BMW R 80 G/S from 1986 In the mid-1980s
After the initial enthusiasm, it was obvious where the shoe pinched the BMW R 80 G/S on the street and slope. The telescopic fork was too delicate, the shock absorber too cheap. The short original swingarm hopped off-road and was bad for traction. In addition, BMW fans appreciated the powerful 1000cc engine, but it only became stable with an increased amount of oil. That is why tuners like Fallert, Michel or HPN began to optimize the G/S. Such a vehicle with historic-contemporary engine and chassis tuning is for sale here. It belonged to a small series of 17 (according to HPN) built and optimized by Josef Leismüller Jr (+ 2018), a BMW tuner from Wallgau am Walchensee. The motorbikes almost all remained in the Upper Bavarian area and are now really rare. One of the surviving machines is offered here restored with original documents. The modifications were all registered before 1990! Modified by Leismüller: Exchange of the telescopic fork for a specimen of the Maico GM 500 motocross machine. This fork has 42 millimetre stanchion diameter, possible air support and approx. 300 mm suspension travel in special BMW fork bridges. The whole thing is combined with the original 80 G/S Akront front wheel, a 280 mm Brembo disc brake (BMW parts) and solid fork bridges from the BMW range. The brake line was exchanged for a steel flex line. At the rear, the swingarm including propshaft was extended 50 mm and a strong gusset plate on the swingarm accommodates a high-quality Öhlins shock absorber. The Öhlins piggy-back leg has adjustable rebound and compression damping as well as continuously adjustable spring preload. At the rear, instead of the 2.50 x 18 rim, a 2.75 x 17 Akront rim is fitted, tyres 130/90 - 17 instead of 4.00 - 18. The engine is brought up to 1,000 ccm with standard parts. The standard oil pan was exchanged for a reinforced one with 1.25 l larger oil capacity and massive underride protection. All conversions were registered by TÜV Süd at swingarm conversion in 1990, are therefore contemporary and do not prevent H-registration or entry in historic enduro competitions. Enduro competitions. The first registration is 5th June 1986, so it is Not obligated for an exhaust emission test. It is a contemporary competent engine and chassis rebuild, which eliminates the standard weaknesses of the R 80 G/S to a large extent. For the rebuild, a used but perfect chassis was initially used as a basis, as the existing one could not be saved. The engine, manual gearbox and final drive were overhauled by H. Rabenbauer (Waldkirchen) and L. Storch (Kalbach): The clutch was completely renewed. Timing chain with tensioner, piston rings, connecting rod bearings, main bearings. The cylinder heads were extensively overhauled at Rabenbauer (overlay welds, all threads new). The gearbox was rebuilt with new bearings, and a longer fifth gear was added to reduce the engine speed by 500 rpm. The axle drive is also newly mounted and spaced. The Öhlins suspension strut was professionally overhauled at Braun in Emmendingen. All body parts have been blasted, as well as all frame parts, swingarm, handlebars, exhaust manifold, collector and repainted. All body parts have been professionally repainted, the tank has been cleaned and the seat has been professionally repaired. New mudguards from Acerbis.
